The West End continues to demonstrate resilience and growth, with the latest 2024 attendance figures revealing impressive numbers. Over 17.1 million people attended West End performances in 2024, maintaining a record set in 2023. This marks an 11% increase in attendance compared to pre-pandemic levels, with nearly five million more people attending shows in London compared to Broadway. Around one in four international visitors to London are also taking in a West End production, underscoring its global appeal.
Compared to other entertainment sectors, the West End is thriving. Cinema attendance has dropped by 28%, while visitor attractions have seen an 8.8% decline. Notably, West End theatre has expanded, even with real-term average ticket prices five percent lower than before the pandemic. In fact, the West End attracts more attendees than the Premier League, with total match attendance falling 2.5 million behind theatre numbers.
The theatre industry also remains a significant economic driver for London. For every pound spent on a theatre ticket, an additional £1.27 is spent in local businesses, such as restaurants and shops. Nationally, the sector contributes £2.39 billion annually to the economy and supports 230,000 full-time jobs.
However, challenges remain, including a sharp rise in energy bills, soaring production costs, and rising staffing expenses. Public funding for the arts has also decreased by up to 48% in real terms since 2010. Despite these challenges, the introduction of permanent Theatre Tax Relief has been crucial in aiding the sector's recovery and growth.
