The reworked version of the cult musical comedy Eugenius! is returning this spring to The Turbine Theatre in London.
The show, a homage to the comic books and nostalgia of the 1980s era, had a premiere at The London Palladium as a special one-night concert performance, with two runs at The Other Palace in Victoria. The planned West End transfer from The Other Palace to the Ambassadors Theatre in 2018 was unfortunately cancelled.
Eugenius! was nominated for five WhatsOnStage Awards in 2019, and the following year producers streamed the show online during the Covid pandemic for the charity. It was streamed over 100,000 times within 2 days on Facebook alone.
The new run of the show will preview at the Turbine Theatre on 17 March 2023, with gala nights set on 21 and 22 March, and closing run on 28 May 2023.
The protagonist is Eugene, a geeky student being picked on at school, who dreams of getting his fictional superhero “Tough Man” played on the big screen in Hollywood.
The reworked production is directed by Hannah Chissick and features a book, music and lyrics written by Ben Adams and Chris Wilkins. Adams was previously known as a member of British boyband. The score was praised by The Guardian and The Stage and described as “astonishingly catchy” and “infectiously poppy pastiche”.
The previous cast included Rob Houchen, Laura Baldwin, Marcus Brigstocke, Daniel Buckley and Brian Blessed. The new casting and creative team are yet to be announced.
“A show where geeks rule, dreams do come true, and everyone finds the superhero inside themselves!”
